To say I was stoked to be approached by local calligrapher and designer Harry Roberts to work on a collaborative design is an understatement. He’s by far one of the cities most talented hand letterers with a skillset that goes far beyond your average designer. We discussed ideas and thought it would be cool to revisit some of my original designs and landed on ‘Fortune Favours The Brave’. A design I originally did back in the early days of SICCo with a message that stands true today. Especially with everything that is going on in the world right now and the constant drive to keep the brand alive during the rollercoaster that is independent retail.
Harry is extremely prolific and has worked with multiple local businesses and last year was even part of the Art Ads billboard project along Goldsmith Avenue with his ‘Love The Player, Hate The Strain’ design alongside many of the cities finest creatives. Continuing his appetite to work collaboratively we are really happy to bring you this exclusive new design on both a tee and art print.
“A designer, letterer and illustrator from Portsmouth, I studied graphic design at Bournemouth Arts University, and returned to Southsea to set up my freelancing career. I have been designing logos and websites for local companies since I graduated in 2016 and i've recently been chosen to work for companies such as Adobe and Raymarine. I've been focusing mainly on hand lettering for a couple of years now and pride myself in starting and sometimes finishing my projects entirely in pencil. I enjoy exploring the traditional methods of my craft and trying to keep them alive.
This collaboration with Strong Island Clothing Co was such a joy to work on and an honour to be a part of as I’ve grown up along side their merchandise and influence on our seaside town.” HRA
Harry set out to sketch the design by hand including creating unique fonts and style sheets with every detail starting with pen and paper. The final design originally formed part of a two piece pre-order with a hand screen printed two colour premium men's or women's cotton tee and an A5 or A4 digital art print taken from the original illustration which shows the details of the process in pencil. These are now available and each print comes on heavyweight matte finish paper and is signed by the artist.
